Requirements:

  • Minimum certification: Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
  • Minimum age: 12 years
  • Good general health and basic swimming ability
  • Recent first aid/CPR certification is strongly recommended (or can be taken in combination with this course)

Description:

The course combines theory, skill training in shallow water and realistic scenarios in open water. In the knowledge sessions you cover stress in diving, self-rescue skills, recognising signs of stress in others, rescue techniques and emergency planning.

In confined water you practise the core skills step by step: towing a tired diver, surfacing and supporting a distressed diver, controlled ascents, equipment removal in the water and basic search patterns. Over three days in open water you then put everything together in realistic rescue scenarios, including helping panicked divers at the surface, dealing with unresponsive divers underwater and at the surface, organising a search and coordinating emergency procedures with the rest of the team.

Course Structure

Knowledge Sessions: Understanding stress in diving, self-rescue skills, recognizing diver stress, rescue techniques, emergency planning. Confined Water Training: Practice skills step by step in shallow water – towing, surfacing a tired diver, equipment removal, controlled ascents. Open Water Scenarios (over 3 days):

  • Assisting panicked divers at the surface
  • Managing unresponsive divers underwater and at the surface
  • Search patterns and bringing a diver to safety
  • Coordinating emergency procedures with your team
